Winter 2022 Adult Hockey
Bradley Mersereau Memorial Award
Published: March 24, 2022
This award is named the “Brad Memorial”. It is in memory of Bradley Mersereau, who was an avid participant in Tucker Hockey Adult Programs. Brad never represented himself as a great skater, or, for that matter, a good hockey player. He just loved getting out and being active. He always found a healthy balance between family, work and the enjoyment of hockey. He was a “true friend” and “hockey enthusiast”.

Since 2004, this Tucker Hockey Award has been issued quarterly each year to worthy program participants.
Winter 2022 Adult Hockey
Bradley Mersereau Memorial Award Recipient:
Barrie Hill

Here is a little bit about Barrie:
- What do you like about the sport of hockey?
I remember as a kid, watching Guy LaFleur on TV going end to end and scoring. It was unbelievable, like magic on ice.
When the Flames arrived and eventually went on to hoist the cup, I remember celebrating with everyone on Electric Avenue! Now we watch the Flames on TV and at the ‘Dome’.
I didn’t play growing up but had my first chance during my 30’s; I was like a pylon with skates and gloves yet somehow managed to score a goal, only later to get a puck in the face and stitches on my lip. Still, I was hooked.
A few years later I ended up on a team with old friends and a few ‘anklers’ like me.
I had a blast playing but joking around on the bench and locker rooms plus the beer and chicken wings after, were a big part of the experience.
We took a video of our team playing and it was like we were skating through molasses… Enter Tucker Hockey.
- When and how did you initially get involved with Tucker Hockey?
Almost 20 years ago, Rex and his staff introduced me to their adult program. Through their quality teaching and encouragement, I was able to significantly improve my skills and boost my confidence. Over the years, Tucker hockey has helped me improve my skills and continue to enjoy playing.
Improved skills didn’t stop me from getting a broken leg, early on, (who takes a slap shot from outside the blueline?). I remember my toddlers chanting “Daddy…Daddy” as I clunked down the hall on my crutches to dinner.
- How has hockey influenced or positively affected your life?
My kids were able watch some of my games, which led to them wanting to play Minor Hockey and Ringette. I became a Timbits Coordinator and had the pleasure of making new friends while those players and their parents enjoyed hockey. My son has also improved his skills through Tucker Hockey. I think hockey has been an extremely rewarding experience in our family – it’s been like magic on ice.

Celebrating City Championship win with son Jackson!
Editor’s Note:
Barrie, wow almost 20 years! Glad you have enjoyed the on ice experience. We have valued your hockey friendship and loyalty to Tucker Hockey. We wish you many more years of enjoyment from the great game of hockey. Continued good health and keep that youthful exuberance! See you at the rink soon!
