Fall 2020 Adult Hockey – Bradley Mersereau Memorial Award Recipient: Brent Jones

This award is named the “Brad Memorial”. It is in memory of Bradley Mersereau, who was an avid participant in Tucker Hockey Adult Programs. Brad never represented himself as a great skater, or, for that matter, a good hockey player. He just loved getting out and being active. He always found a healthy balance between family, work and the enjoyment of hockey. He was a “true friend” and “hockey enthusiast”.

Here is a little more on Brent:

Tell us a little about yourself.

Brent Jones, married to Tracey, lived in Calgary most of my life. I have two boys. As on December 2020 Devon is a commercial roofer apprentice and Colton is going to play NCAA Div 1 Lacrosse at the New Jersey Institute of Technology starting next September 2021.

What do you like about the sport of hockey?

The artistry and skill and how fierce and competitive it can be, even playing low level adult recreational hockey.

When and how did you initially get involved with Tucker Hockey?

My oldest son (a goalie) was playing in Atom while I was an assistant coach.  Rex came to do power skating and I was quite impressed.  I decided to play hockey, after 30 years not playing, and to improve my skill to help with coaching drills, Rex made it fun to start again and I’m still learning!  I take away something new from every program I complete.

When I read out the Bradley Mersereau award criteria to my wife Tracey, she burst out laughing saying that was me to a Tee!  A couple of years after I started playing again, my kids were able to watch me play, I had a great game, scored 2 goals thought things were great until afterwards when the kids said “ How come you’re so slow!”

What has been the most enjoyable part of the Tucker Hockey experience for you?

Meeting and skating with the regulars plus the staff are great, nothing but positive things to say about Jimmy, Dave, Frank and Brian to name a few.  Recently Rex asked me to demonstrate one of the drills and I even did a good job, so that shows even old dogs can learn and improve.

How has hockey influenced or positively affected your life?

Just being able to go out and have fun with the guys.  Earlier in 2020 I had some back issues and getting back to Tucker and playing made it easier to go through all the physio, treatments and workouts to get back on the ice and to get as close to normal as I could, I had a goal!.  Too bad Covid-19 arrived at the wrong time.

Editor’s Note:

Brent has been attending our Tucker Hockey Friday AM & Noon Adult Recreational Programs for more than a decade now! Yes, he is a “hard core” Tucker Hockey participant! Brent has a great attitude and he’s always eager to learn and improve every time out. Brent, we wish you good health. Hope to see you back on the ice in 2021 for some more fun times; once this Covid-19 situation improves! Take Care.
