2025 Q2 Adult Hockey
Bradley Mersereau
Memorial Award
Recipient:
Martin Ciuk
Published June 25, 2025
This award is named the “Brad Memorial”. It is in memory of Bradley Mersereau, who was an avid participant in Tucker Hockey Adult Programs. Brad never represented himself as a great skater, or, for that matter, a good hockey player. He just loved getting out and being active. He always found a healthy balance between family, work and the enjoyment of hockey. He was a “true friend” and “hockey enthusiast”.

Martin Ciuk

About Martin:
- What do you like about the sport of hockey?
I have always enjoyed the speed of the game, as well as the combination of finesse with the physicality on ice. I particularly love how all these things come into play even more as the stakes are raised during the playoffs. There is no game, like the good ol’ hockey game.
- When and how did you initially get involved with Tucker Hockey?
Before I moved to Calgary, I started attending an adult hockey clinic in Cambridge, Onterrible. Unfortunately, covid put an end to that. After I moved, I knew that I wanted to take up hockey again and did some research. Tucker Hockey came highly recommended, so I signed up. I started in the Winter session of Adult Fundamentals in 2025, and over those 8 weeks I saw myself make more progress in skating and stick handling than I did over the previous 30 or so years. So much so, that I immediately signed up for a repeat of the fundamentals class during the Spring session to bake in all I learned. Now that that’s coming to an end, I just signed up for the Summer intensive session in September. I also hope to take the adult advanced techniques class one day. I really appreciate the level of instruction and patience Ron, Jimmy and Korwin have for us old dogs learning new tricks.
- How has hockey influenced or positively affected your life?
That’s a hard question, but over the last few months, (I think) I have gotten to the point, where I think I can go out on a shinny rink and not be terribly embarrassed. Maybe, in the fall after the weeklong September course, I will join a local beer league for the first time in my life. For a middle-aged guy who’s always loved hockey, but never played beyond Grade 11 gym, that means the world to me, to be finally able to participate.

Congratulations Martin on being selected as the recipient of this award!
Editor’s Note:
Martin is a very hard-working participant in the Wednesday night Adult Program.
He has definitely embraced the Tucker Hockey philosophy saying it’s “Your program”, it’s “You and the Drill”, “Go at your own pace”, and “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes”.
Martin is definitely one of those participants where we appreciate his hard work, positive attitude, and we always look forward to celebrating his on-ice improvements as he develops in the Adult Program.
